Historic Neighborhoods in Chantilly, Virginia
Once you get into the Chantilly, VA area, you will start to notice several historic neighborhoods surrounding the historic district in Chantilly. As a real estate agent who specializes in this area and provides home-buying services for these neighborhoods, I wanted to become familiar with each one of the historic Chantilly neighborhoods.
London Towne
London Towne is a historic neighborhood in Chantilly, Virginia. The area is named for the former London Towne Shopping Center, which was built on land once owned by Benjamin Franklin's son William Franklin and was one of the first enclosed shopping centers in the Washington D.C. area. Today, the neighborhood is home to several restaurants and shops that are located along Centreville Road (VA 28), including Panera Bread and O'Reilly Auto Parts. The only significant landmark remaining from the original London Towne Center is an office building called "London House" that now serves as the headquarters of Capital One Bank.
Centreville
This historic neighborhood is located in the heart of Chantilly and includes many of the town’s oldest homes. The area has a rich history dating back to the 1700s when it was part of a 13,000-acre parcel owned by John Campbell, who was one of Fairfax County’s first settlers. Centreville was originally named “Centerville” by Thomas Lee, who owned much of what is now Fairfax County during the 18th century. In 1813, Drury Woodbury purchased land in Centreville and began building his house on what is now known as Lee Road. The town was officially named Centreville after Woodbury’s wife Caroline, whose family owned much of the land in that area.
South Riding
South Riding was first settled in 1723 by Thomas Buckland and his family. The Bucklands were Quakers who had migrated from Pennsylvania. They established a farm along what is now Buckland Road which runs through South Riding and has been designated as an important National Historic Landmark. In 1752 John Marshall built Marshalls Station along this road which served as both a tavern and stagecoach stop between Alexandria and Winchester during colonial times. It was located at what is now the intersection of Buckland Road and Leesburg Pike near where Mount Vernon Regional Park is today.
Franklin Farm
The neighborhood of Franklin Farm was founded in the 1920s and features some of the most sought-after homes in Chantilly. Many of these homes were built by prominent architects like Frank Lloyd Wright or Paul Cret. The homes feature unique designs, such as the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house that has a circular driveway and curved walls with rounded windows.
Franklin Farm is bordered by Braddock Road on the south side, Rokeby Lane on the west side, Walker Mill Road on the east side, and Old Centreville Road on the north side.
Westfields
Westfields is one of the most popular historic neighborhoods in Chantilly. This neighborhood was originally built by the Westfield family who owned the famous Westfield Farms. The original house was built around 1800 and over time, it has been expanded to include a large farmhouse with multiple barns and other outbuildings. Over the years, many additions were built onto this property including an English Tudor cottage and several other buildings including a carriage house as well as a dairy barn.
Takeaway: Although Chantilly is a fairly new and small town, they offer a lot to their residents and we were excited to be able to see what they have to offer. The town has been focused on preserving its history with the Station Main Street Historic District and Chantilly North Historic District. There are also many other single-family homes as well as subdivisions that include beautiful custom-built homes. Overall, Chantilly is a wonderful place to live!
